- Phil 2:1-4
- Ps 131:1-3
- Luke 14:12-14
“Make my joy complete by being of a single mind, one in
love, one in heart and one in mind” (Philippians 2: 2)
ONE fine day it occurred to the
Members of the Body that they were doing all the work and the Belly was having
all the food. So they held a meeting, and after a long discussion, decided to
go on strike until the Belly consented to take its proper share of the work. So
for a day or two, the Hands refused to take the food, the Mouth refused to
receive it, and the Teeth had no work to do. But after a day or two the Members
began to find that they themselves were not in a very active condition: the
Hands could hardly move, and the Mouth was all parched and dry, while the Legs
were unable to support the rest. So thus they found that even the Belly in its
dull quiet way was doing necessary work for the Body, and that all must work
together or the Body will go to pieces. The moral of the story: Unity is
Strength; Oneness is powerful.
So powerful is the light of “one”
that can illuminate the family, the nation and the whole world. The power of “one”
goes across the barriers of separation, the stumbling block of racialism, the
fence of tribalism, and the barrier of discrimination. The “one” I am referring
to is captured by St. Paul, “Make my joy
complete by being of a single mind, one in love, one in heart and one in mind”
(Phillipians 2: 2). The phrase “one in love” denotes mutual giving and
receiving. It is the language which is understood by all. The phrase “one in
heart” means being animated with the same affections. It means the alliance of hearts. The phrase “one
in mind” means tenderly rejoicing and grieving together. Moreover, it means thinking
the same thing. The word “one” denotes the union of heart, of feeling, of plan,
of purpose.
We are all ONE. Our
source is one. Our image is one that is the image of God. Oneness is a secret
of joy. Oneness is a secret of solidarity. It is common to all. It supports
all. It underlies all. It inspires all. United we stand divided we fall. Without the
power of one, families disintegrate, empires fall, institutions fragment and
things fall apart. The absence of “one” is so ugly. Then, promote the sense of
oneness. Promote this principle of
relatedness.
